clanmcw_fire_at_tonga_1.jpgThe wreck of the CLAN MACWILLIAM.

The wreck of the copra steamer Clan MacWilliam lies in 37m of water in the Southern arm of the Port of Refuge. Built in 1918 this 127m 6000 tonne Clan shipping Line freighter steamed into Neiafu harbour in December 1927 with a smouldering fire in No. 3 copra hold. The forward holds collapsed, cracking open the steamers plates. One story has it that the captain and first engineer refused to abandon the ship and went down with it: another relates that the captain locked the first engineer into the engine room to prevent him from abandoning the effort to save the ship. The wreck is teaming with marine life, and is a popular dive site.
